Riese & Müller Load Bike Cover — Load 60, Load 75 & Fitting

The Riese & Müller Load is the full-suspension end of the front-loader world — a single box ahead of the rider, a 20in wheel at the front and a 26in at the back, and suspension at both ends that most box bikes do not have. It is built to be ridden every day in weather, which is exactly why it usually ends up parked outside rather than wheeled through a house. A bike that size and that expensive is worth a proper waterproof rain cover.

The cover is the BikeParka Cargo, and on a Load that recommendation carries more weight than usual: the Cargo cover is a BikeParka × Riese & Müller collaboration, co-developed and R&M-branded for their own front-loader sales. Load 60 or Load 75 — how much room is there?

The two sizes are the same bike with a different box and a different wheelbase, and both fit the Cargo cover, but not with the same amount of room. Riese & Müller publish the Load 60 at 248cm overall and the Load 75 at 264.5cm. Against the Cargo cover's approximately 276cm, that is roughly 28cm spare on the 60 and roughly 11.5cm on the 75. Both figures are official R&M numbers with high dimensional confidence — the Load 75's 264.5cm is independently supported by an Electric Bike Review measurement of 265.4cm, which agrees closely.

The extra 16.5cm is all in the wheelbase: 182.5cm on the Load 60 against 199cm on the Load 75. Handlebar width is 62cm on both, against the 120cm the Cargo cover allows, so the bars are never the deciding number on a Load. Length is.

Two honest notes on that table. The Load 75 at 264.5cm is the longest Riese & Müller front-loader we hold, and 11.5cm of headroom is not much once a rear accessory or a tent is in play — our own internal note on it says it is worth a physical spot-check, so treat it as a fit we are confident in on a bare bike and worth a message to us on an accessorised one. And while the Load4 75 shares the Load5 75's official 264.5cm, we grade its fit confidence at medium rather than high simply because we hold less on it, so we would rather flag that than round it up.

Load4 and Load5 — does the generation change the cover?

Not on length, which is the number that matters. Our database records the Load 60 at 248cm and the Load 75 at 264.5cm across both the Load4 and Load5 generations, and both generations carry the same 62cm handlebar figure. The Load5 records are the ones we treat as current; the Load4 60 and Load4 75 are held separately and land on the same recommendation. In practice, if you know whether you have a 60 or a 75, you know which side of the margin you are on, and the Load4-versus-Load5 question does not change the answer.

What can change is the cockpit. Our Load4 records show a flat bar and the Load5 records a riser, and a riser bar sits higher inside a cover than a flat one. On a Cargo cover, with 120cm of bar allowance against 62cm of bike, neither is remotely close to the width limit — it is worth knowing, not worth worrying about.

Children, box seats and the child tent

Children ride in the front box on a Load, not on a rear seat. Riese & Müller rate the Load 60 for up to two children in the box and the Load 75 for up to three — the extra child is the reason the 75 exists. Because there is no rear child seat in the picture, the seat rules that decide between our Longtail and Longtail WS covers on a longtail bike simply do not apply here. Whatever the box carries, the cover is the Cargo.

Seats, belts and cushions inside the box are a non-issue: they sit below the box rim, inside a footprint the cover already drops over. The child tent is the thing to think about. A fitted tent raises the height above the box without changing the bike's footprint, and our database records the fit with a canopy up as unconfirmed — we have not verified it, so we do not claim it. Fold the tent down or take it off before covering. On a Load 75 in particular, where the length margin is already the tightest in the R&M range, we would not want a tent eating into it as well.

The Cargo cover is made from waterproof, seam-sealed ripstop fabric and is PFAS- and PFC-free. It has lock-through openings, allowing the cover and bike to be secured together, adjustable toggles to help draw the cover in around the bike on windy days, and it packs into its own Stuff Sac.

Which size cover?

For a Riese & Müller Load there is one cover in the range to consider: the Cargo. It is our front-loader and box-bike cover, approximately 276cm long, around 130cm high and cut for handlebars up to 120cm. Our longtail, standard and kids covers are all built around a bike with a wheel where the Load has a box, and none of them are recommended for it. Two measurements decide it. Take overall length from the front tyre to the very back of the rear wheel or rack, with anything fitted that you plan to leave on, and check it against approximately 276cm — a Load 60 at 248cm has plenty of room, a Load 75 at 264.5cm has about 11.5cm. Then take the widest point across the box or bars against 120cm, which on a 62cm Load is a formality. If a rack, a tent or a load puts you near the length limit, message us before ordering.

Which BikeParka cover fits a Riese & Müller Load 60 or Load 75?

The Cargo for both. Riese & Müller publish the Load 60 at 248cm and the Load 75 at 264.5cm, and both sit inside the Cargo cover's approximately 276cm. Handlebars are 62cm on both, well inside the 120cm the cover allows. Both are high-confidence fits in our database, and the Cargo cover is the design BikeParka co-developed with Riese & Müller for exactly these bikes.

How much room is there around a Load 75 in the cover?

About 11.5cm of length. At 264.5cm the Load 75 is the longest Riese & Müller front-loader we hold, against a cover of approximately 276cm. That is comfortably inside for a bare bike, and our confidence in it is high — but it is the tightest R&M fit in the range, and a fitted child tent, a rear rack or an overhanging load will use that margin up. Our own note on the Load 75 says it is worth a physical spot-check, so if yours is heavily accessorised, message us first.

Is the cover the same for a Load4 and a Load5?

Yes. The Load4 60 and Load5 60 both measure 248cm, and the Load4 75 and Load5 75 both measure 264.5cm, so the generation does not move the recommendation — the size does. One caveat worth stating: we grade the Load4 75's fit confidence at medium rather than high, not because of a known problem but because we hold less on it than on the Load5.

Can I leave the child tent up under the cover?

We would fold it down or take it off first. A tent raises the height above the box, and the Cargo cover is sized for a bare box bike. Our database records the canopy-up fit as unconfirmed rather than as a failure — we have not verified it, so we will not claim it. With the tent down the bike fits, and on a Load 75 the length margin is tight enough already.

Do child seats change which cover I need for a Load?

No. Children ride in the front box on a Load — up to two in a Load 60 and up to three in a Load 75 — rather than on a rear child seat, so the Longtail and Longtail WS distinction that applies to longtail bikes does not apply here. Seats, belts and cushions all sit below the box rim, inside the footprint the cover already drops over. It is only what stands above the box line that needs measuring.

How do I measure a Riese & Müller Load before ordering?

Stand the bike on its wheels with the accessories you intend to leave on it fitted and the tent folded down. Measure overall length from the front tyre to the back of the rear wheel or rack, then the widest point across the box or bars, then the height to the tallest thing still standing on the bike. Compare the length against approximately 276cm and the width against 120cm. If you would rather not measure, Find your fit will do the matching for you.

Will a rain cover keep a Load dry parked outside?

That is what it is for. The fabric is waterproof, seam-sealed ripstop, so rain runs off rather than soaking through, and the adjustable toggles pull the cover in so wind is less likely to lift it off a bike this size. Lock-through openings let you pass a lock through the cover so bike and cover are secured together. It is weather protection for day-to-day outdoor parking rather than a replacement for a locked garage.
