The Best Bike Cover for Outdoor Storage: What to Look For

If your bike lives outside, the cover you choose decides whether it comes through winter looking after itself or needing new cables, a new chain and a lot of cleaning. Most covers look the same in a photo. The differences that matter are in the seams, the cut and the fabric, and you can't see them on a listing.

What makes a good outdoor bike cover

1. Sealed seams, not just waterproof fabric

Almost every cover is made from a coated fabric that sheds water. The weak point is the stitching: every needle hole is a way in. A cover that is genuinely waterproof has its seams taped or sealed. 2. It lets the bike breathe

A cover keeps rain off; it can't dry a bike that is already wet. Seal a damp bike under plastic and the water has nowhere to go, which is how people conclude that covers cause rust. A fitted cover that is elasticated at the wheels and open underneath lets air move. 3. A cut that fits your bike

One-size-fits-all covers are cut large to fit everything, so on most bikes they flap. A flapping cover catches wind like a sail, wears through where it rubs, and is the one you find in next door's garden. Look for covers sized by bike type, with an elasticated hem around both wheels and an adjustable cinch. Handlebar width is the measurement that usually decides the size.

4. A way to lock through it

If the bike is parked anywhere public, you want to lock the bike and the cover together, otherwise the cover is the easiest thing to steal. The URBAN has lock-through panels; the Longtail, Longtail WS and Cargo have lock-through slots. The STASH and XL / MTB have none, and are the simpler choice for a garden or a private space.

5. Tough fabric that can be repaired

Ripstop fabric has a reinforcing grid woven in, so a small tear stays small instead of running. It also means most damage can be patched at home with a standard tent repair kit. All BikeParka covers are PFAS- and PFC-free, with no "forever chemicals" in the waterproofing.

Covers at the £10 to £20 end can be fine for occasional use under a carport. If your bike lives outside all year, check these before you buy:

• Are the seams taped or sealed, or only stitched?
• Is it sized for your type of bike, or one size for everything?
• Does it have elastic around both wheels and a way to tighten it?
• Can you lock through it?
• What is the fabric, and can it be repaired?

If the listing doesn't answer them, that is usually the answer.

The right cover for bigger bikes

Are bike covers worth it?

Measure handlebar width end to end, length from tyre to tyre and height to the highest point. Handlebar width usually decides it: up to 63cm for the STASH or URBAN, up to 100cm for the XL / MTB. How do I look after a bike cover?
