PFAS-Free Bike Covers: What It Means and Why It Matters
Every BikeParka cover is PFAS-free and PFC-free. It says so on every product page, and people often ask what it means. Here is the short version.
Which BikeParka for your bike? Road, hybrid and commuter bikes: STASH or URBAN · Mountain bikes and wider handlebars: XL / MTB · Longtails: Longtail, or Longtail WS with child seats fitted · Front-loader cargo bikes: Cargo · Not sure? Compare all covers or Find Your Fit by make and model.
What PFAS are
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals that repel water, oil and stains. They are often called forever chemicals because they barely break down in the environment.
Why they turn up in outdoor gear
For decades the easiest way to make water bead and roll off fabric was a fluorinated finish, known in the trade as a durable water repellent. Rain jackets, tents, rucksacks and covers have all used them.
PFAS and PFC: is there a difference?
PFC, short for per- and polyfluorinated chemicals, is the older term the outdoor industry used. In practice a product labelled PFC-free and one labelled PFAS-free are making the same promise. We state both so there is no doubt.
Why brands are moving away from them
Because they do not break down, PFAS build up in water, soil, wildlife and people. Some have been linked to health problems, and regulators in the EU, the UK and the US are restricting them. A bike cover lives outside in the rain for years, so whatever is on the fabric ends up in the garden.
How a cover stays waterproof without them
A BikeParka is waterproof because of how it is built: ripstop fabric with a PU coating, and seams sealed with tape so water cannot get through the stitching. None of that needs a fluorinated finish.
What to check on any bike cover
- Does it say PFAS-free or PFC-free outright? Words like eco or green on their own do not tell you.
- Is it waterproof, or only water-repellent? A repellent finish wears off. A coated fabric keeps water out.
- Are the seams sealed? Stitch holes are where an unsealed cover leaks first.
PFAS-free covers: common questions
Are BikeParka covers PFAS-free?
Yes. Every BikeParka cover is PFAS-free and PFC-free.
What does PFAS-free mean on a bike cover?
It means the cover is made without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, the forever chemicals long used in water-repellent finishes.
Is a PFAS-free bike cover still waterproof?
Yes. A BikeParka is waterproof because of its PU-coated ripstop and taped seams, not a fluorinated finish.
What is the difference between PFAS-free and PFC-free?
PFC is the older outdoor-industry term for the same family of fluorinated chemicals. Both labels make the same promise.
