Cargo and Longtail Bikes in Winter: How to Keep Them Outside

A cargo or longtail bike is usually the family car replacement, and it usually lives outside: down the side of the house, in a front garden, under the stairs of a block of flats. Winter is when that starts to cost money. Not because the bike can't be ridden in the rain (it can), but because it stands wet for days at a time, with road salt on the chain and a battery, a motor and child seats all sitting in the weather.

What winter does to a cargo bike parked outside

• Standing water, not rain. A wet ride does no harm. A bike that never dries out does: water sits in cable housings, around disc brakes, in bottom brackets and on bare metal connectors.
• Road salt. Gritted roads leave salt brine on the chain, cassette and frame. Left for a week it starts corrosion that a summer of riding never would.
• Condensation. Cold nights and damp days mean moisture forms on and under anything sealed tight. A plastic sheet or tarp traps it against the bike; a breathable cover lets it escape.
• Wind. Winter storms are when loose covers blow off, and a big cargo or longtail bike presents a lot of surface to the wind.
• Grime on the family parts. Child seats, cushions, boxes and footboards collect leaves, mud and wet, and they are the parts children sit on.

Looking after a cargo or longtail bike through winter

1. Let it drip before you cover it. After a wet ride, give the bike a few minutes. A cover keeps rain off; it can't dry a bike that went under soaking wet.
2. Rinse the salt off. A quick rinse or wipe of the chain and drivetrain after gritted roads, then re-lube once it's dry. This, plus a cover, prevents most of the rust you see on bikes kept outside.
3. Charge indoors, never under a cover. If the battery is removable, bring it inside to charge and keep it indoors in freezing weather. Your bike's manual gives the temperature range it should be charged and stored in.
4. Park it on something hard. Paving, decking or gravel rather than grass or soil, and out of the wind line where you can. Our guide to what survives winter in a garden goes through the best and worst spots.
5. Fasten the cover properly before a storm. Pull the toggles tight and, on covers with lock-through slots, run your lock through the slots and around the bike so the lock holds the cover in place as well as the bike.
6. Brush heavy snow off. Don't leave a thick load of snow sitting on the cover over child seats or a canopy.

What a winter cover needs to do on a big bike

• Be long enough. Measure the whole bike, front tyre to back tyre, including a rear deck, rack or front box. A cover that rides up leaves the drivetrain exposed.

Common questions

Can I leave a cargo bike outside all winter?

Yes, plenty of people have to. What matters is keeping rain and salt from sitting on it: park it on a hard surface, cover it, rinse the drivetrain after gritted roads and keep the battery indoors in freezing weather.

Should I cover my e-cargo bike when it's wet?

Give it a few minutes to drip first. A breathable cover lets remaining moisture escape, but it can't dry a soaking bike.

Can I charge my e-bike with the cover on?

No. Take the cover off, or take the battery out and charge it indoors.

Which cover fits a Tern GSD with the Clubhouse+?
